PSHE

“It is vital that when educating our children’s brains, we do not neglect to educate their hearts.” Dalai Lama

“Be the change you want to see in the world.” Mahatma Ghandi

PSHE - Stands for Personal, Social, Health, Economic Education and provides an opportunity for pupils to reflect upon issues, understand themselves, manage relationships and recognise the contribution they can make to the wider community.

PSHE Curriculum Intent
The knowledge and skills children learn in their PSHE lessons at Potters Gate and St Andrews enable them to become; independent, positive, confident, healthy and responsible members of society. They also help to develop our children spiritually, morally, socially and culturally (SMSC).
PSHE is taught across the school from Reception to Year 6 on a weekly basis. As a school, we follow 'Wellbeing Objectives; with 6 main areas that develop learning, and results in the acquisition of knowledge and skills. The 6 main areas are: Economic, Spiritual, Environmental, Mental and Emotional, Social and Physical and Sensory Wellbeing. The knowledge and skills enable our children to access the wider curriculum and work collaboratively with others.
PSHE lessons are always taught within a relevant and meaningful content, which is supported through through a strong emphasis on emotional literacy, building resilience and nurturing mental and physical health. We often take our lessons outside of the classroom through hands on experiences, trips, visitors and outdoor learning lessons which creates a sense of 'real life' experience, enjoyment and develops self-worth.
Our curriculum will prepare children for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences for later life. Our PSHE lessons equip children with an age-appropriate, sound understanding of risk and the knowledge and skills necessary to make safe and informed decisions. With an ever-changing society, we provide our children with a strong understanding of the diverse world around around them and support them in playing a positive role in contributing to the school and the wider community.

Weaving through the heart of our PSHE teaching, is a commitment to enhancing and promoting our core Christian Values

Fellowship

Our children learn how to cultivate fellowship by showing kindness and compassion to all. They are taught that despite the many differences we may have, we are all part of one bigger collective and that our words and actions can have a ripple effect. Our PSHE curriculum supports our pupils to understand their emotions as well as the emotions of others, fostering empathy and promoting compassion and caring.

Justice

Pupils develop their understanding of the wider world and learn to respect the differences of other communities. We teach our children that as individuals and as a collective they have power and that they should use their voice to do good. Through curriculum learning we support our children to value the need for equality and to explore ways to make a fairer society. Children develop the skills to debate and the confidence to challenge views in a constructive way.

Resilience

We support our children to have high aspirations, a strong belief in themselves and to realise that anything is possible if they put their mind to it. We value effort over outcome, helping children to recognise that mistakes and challenges are opportunities for learning. Children learn strategies to begin to regulate their emotions when things feel difficult.

Trust

Through creating a safe space for exploration, discussion and sharing, our children build trust in themselves & each other. They are encouraged to play a purposeful role in our school, enabling them to develop ownership and responsibility. Children are taught how to earn trust and respect and are supported to develop a strong sense of morality- knowing right from wrong and trying hard to do the right thing, even when it feels difficult.
